7:31 am
he's someone who said mitt romney earlier this year was having a tough time connecting with voters. have things changeed? we'll ask why governor romney is behind at this point in key battleground polls. >> you just mentioned he is behind in some key battleground states include hoying hoy. what is the romney campaign not doing so well at at this point? >> well, by their own admission, the campaign's admission, there's a couple of factors. chief among them is that he hasn't really outlined with his presidency would mean. i think that's something that they feel they have to do more. at the same time, he's having to clean up from mistakes that he made. that 47% video really took its toll. if you think about who he was talking about, key parts of the republican coalition. people on medicare, social security. you talk about people who get government assistance who think of themselves as victims. there's a lot that he's had to try to do to combat an image
7:32 am
that he's dealt with throughout. that he's superrich, out of touch with average americans and isn't someone they can trust to turn things around. do you know the poll question, do you understand the concerns of people like me? that's an area where romney has fallen down. he has to spend precious time trying to rehabilitate himself on that question. his team understands that's had a toll. >> wednesday night's going to be extremely important for both candidates in this election. they're going to be focusing on domestic policy issues. what do they need to say that's going to hook the voters? >> well, if you're mitt romney, you're going focus ton president's record. what he planned to do. what he said he could do in terms of turning the economy around. at the same time, be very clear about what the remedy is. the obama play book has been that he needs more time because the economy was in such a bad place that he needs more than just four years. and, two, the republican ideas are old. that they're ineffective.
7:33 am
that we've seen this play book before. romney's got to separate himself from that. he's got to have his own laundry list of things he's prepared to do to focus like a laser beam on the economy. to really persuade americans who you could argue want a reason to change presidents but are not comfortable in doing so just yet. always tough to beat an incumbent. >> david gregory with meet the press. thank you very much for joining us. >> thank you. >> you can watch "meet the press" later on on channel 11 right here at 10:00 following 11 news at 9. now for a look at this morning's top stories. the o's back in first place with the al east. we'll be talking about some children's books making an unexpected appearance there. she's excited about the o's, too. manny machado. he led the charge against the red sox, driving in the first run of the game in the second inning then breaking a tie in the seventh with a home run. the o's win 4-3. the two are now tied for first
